Strong explosions at the Sloboda ammunition factory shook the town of Czacak, 140 km southwest of Belgrade, in Serbia.
According to Serbian public television RTS, cited by AMPE, no casualties have been reported so far.
The first explosion occurred at 01:30 in storage. Many others followed.
Sporadic explosions continue to be heard even at this time in the factory area.
When the explosions began, there were 60 third-shift workers at the factory. The management of the factory assured that all the workers left the area safely.
However – according to press reports – Six workers are still in the area, trapped in an underground space where they took refuge to protect themselves.
Police and army forces during the night evacuated settlements around the factory and cordoned off the area.
The Sloboda plant mainly produces artillery shells as well as other ammunition. During the 1999 NATO bombings, it was repeatedly targeted by NATO aircraft.
