Explosions at Russian base in Crimea leave one dead, injured, local government says

One person died after explosions in the area of a Russian military air base in Crimea on Tuesday (9), according to Sergey Aksenov, head of the so-called Republic of Crimea.

“The situation is localized and under control. I repeat once more: there is no general evacuation in the district. Only residents of houses located very close to the military airfield will be resettled,” Aksenov said on Telegram.

About 30 people were evacuated from their homes, said Oleg Kryuchkov, adviser to the head of the Crimea region. A cordon perimeter has been established around the airfield, Kryuchkov said on his Telegram channel.

Earlier, the Minister of Health of the Republic of Crimea, Konstantin Skorupsky, said five people were injured after the blasts. It is unclear whether the person who died was among those previously reported to be injured.

One of the injured is undergoing surgery for non-life-threatening injuries, Skorupsky said. Four of the injured received outpatient care for injuries due to broken glass fragments and were sent home after treatment, he added.

Citing the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian state media RIA Novosti previously reported that the explosions were caused by detonated aviation munitions “on the territory of the ‘Saki’ airfield near the Novofedorivka settlement”.

Aksenov said it is at the site in the village of Novofedorivka, in the Saki district, and “there is a scattering of fragments”.

Emergency teams are working at the scene, he added. “Measures were taken to establish a cordon perimeter in a 5 km zone: fences, traffic police teams and foot patrols to prevent injuries to local residents.”

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said it could not determine the cause of the blasts.

“The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense cannot determine the cause of the fire, but once again reminds the fire safety rules and the ban on smoking in unspecified places,” the ministry statement said. “The fact that a fire can be used by a terrorist country in an information war.”
