Explosions hit school in Kabul, killing at least six people

Three blasts hit a high school in western Kabul, the Afghan capital, on Tuesday, killing at least six people and injuring children, according to Afghan health and safety officials.

Many residents of the neighborhood where the school is located belong to the Shia Hazara community, an ethnic and religious minority often targeted by Sunni militant groups, including the Islamic State.

“Three explosions occurred at a secondary school, there are some casualties for our Shia people,” said Khalid Zadran, a spokesman for the Kabul command. Shortly afterward, Zadran reported that six died and 11 were injured in the blasts.

The head of the nursing department at a hospital in the area said at least four people had died and 14 were injured in the blasts. Another medical center said on social media that it had taken in seven children injured in the blasts.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which came after a lull in violence during the Afghan winter months and after the withdrawal of foreign forces last year.

Since taking power in August, the Taliban say they have made the country safer, but international officials and analysts say the risk of a resurgence of militancy remains and the Islamic State has carried out several major attacks.
