Rockets fell on two Egyptian cities on the Red Sea today, injuring several people, sources and officials said, underscoring the risk of regional spillover from the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The explosions occurred in Tampa on the border with Israel and in Nuweiba, about 70 km away, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters, saying they were still gathering more information.
There was no claim of responsibility, but the AlQahera News television network, which according to AFP is close to the Egyptian intelligence services, reported that the rocket that hit Tampa appears to be linked to the war between Hamas militants and the Israeli army around Gaza, about 220 km away.
The Egyptian Ministry of Health announced that six people were injured in tampa, four of whom have already been released from the hospital, after strikes hit an ambulance facility and an apartment building.
Eyewitnesses at the two locations, who asked not to be named, confirmed the explosions and smoke rising into the sky. The Israeli military said it was aware of a security incident outside its borders.
Tampa and Nueva, in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, are popular tourist destinations.
As it borders both Gaza and Israel, Egypt is exposed to the conflict that erupted after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 and Israel’s subsequent bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
Cairo openly supports the flow of aid to Gaza, the release of Hamas hostages and a ceasefire agreement.
Last weekend, several Egyptian border guards were injured when they were accidentally hit by shrapnel from an Israeli tank. Israel apologized for the incident.
Yesterday, Wednesday, Hamas said it had targeted the Israeli city of Eilat across the border from Tampa, in what appeared to be the Palestinian Islamist group’s most far-reaching attack since the conflict erupted on October 7.
In an additional move to the increasingly dangerous situation in the region, the US military announced last week that a Navy ship in the Red Sea intercepted missiles fired by the Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen that could be headed for Israel.
