Explosive found on rail paralyzes four train stations in Rio

Two explosive devices were found this morning (2) in the region of the Costa Barros train station, on the Belford Roxo branch, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. One of them, according to the Civil Police, was a homemade grenade.

The objects were found by agents from the 41st Military Police Battalion and employees from Supervia, the concessionaire responsible for operating the line.

  • The first was on Arnaldo Murineli Street, close to Costa Barros station.
  • The other, on the tracks of the station itself.

The Bomb Squad was called in to both cases.

Transport affected

During the course of the incidents, the Belford Roxo branch operated temporarily only on the stretches between Central do Brasil and Mercadão de Madureira, with an interval of 60 minutes, and between Pavuna and Belford Roxo, with an interval of 40 minutes, according to a note from Supervia.

After cordoning off the area, the two devices were detonated shortly before 2 pm. At around 2:15 pm, train operations were completely normalized, with circulation “from end to end”, according to the statement. Nobody was injured.

Other cases

The case adds to a series of incidents of this type recorded in Rio de Janeiro in 2023. Last Wednesday (27), three people were injured after an explosive device was thrown at a bus on Avenida Brasil.

A week earlier, on September 19, another improvised grenade was detonated by the Bomb Squad, near exit 4 of Rio’s Linha Amarela.

In a statement, the Military Police reported that, in 2023 alone, 487 grenades and 250 explosive devices were seized. Along with rifles (386 seized this year), these items are considered weapons of war.
