Explosive popcorn maker is the new internet fad; Manual do Mundo tested

The explosive popcorn maker became a sensation on social media and you can understand why. It’s a very unusual way of making popcorn and the visual effect of the explosion is very interesting. Not to mention that this is how hominy popcorn is made, which many people know as pink bag popcorn, which is quite popular throughout Brazil.

In the video above, Iberê Thenório, from Manual do Mundo, carries out several tests, using common popcorn, rice, sago, hominy and even peanuts and beans.

How it works
This popcorn maker is known as explosive because the popcorn comes out all at once, being thrown into the air and making a loud noise. In practice, it is a small pressure cooker.

First, you need to understand how corn becomes popcorn. Inside it has a lot of starch and a little water, and on the outside it is protected by a film. When you heat the corn, what’s inside turns into a kind of porridge, and the heated water is at high pressure. In a common pan, there comes a time when the outer film can’t handle it and it bursts. The white part of the popcorn is the starch, and the water comes out as steam.

In the explosive popcorn maker, the pressure outside the corn is also high. This prevents it from popping into popcorn, which will only happen when you open the lid.

Unlike the normal pan, where the corn pops each one at its own time, in this pan, when the lid is opened, all the corn turns into popcorn at once. That’s why it makes a loud noise and the popcorn is thrown into the air with the force of this simultaneous explosion.

The famous pink bag popcorn is made using the same principle, but on an industrial scale. There are huge “pans” that heat the hominy corn and, when it explodes, the popcorn is thrown against a large net.
