Exports of Ukrainian grain via Danube proposed by Johnson

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said today that alternative routes should be considered to retrieve grain stuck in Ukraine, including via the Danube River, if it cannot be moved through the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey.

“The Turks are absolutely necessary to solve this problem. They are doing the best they can… It depends on the Russians agreeing to let this grain out of the country,” Johnson told the House of Commons.

“We will increasingly have to look for alternative means of transporting this grain from Ukraine if we can’t use the sea route, if you can’t use the Bosphorus.”

Turkey says it has stopped a Russian-flagged cargo ship off the Black Sea and is investigating a Ukrainian claim it was carrying stolen grain.

The British prime minister told MPs that there were solutions that did not involve the presence of British or other warships in the Black Sea.

“What we’re also looking at is the possibility of using the river, using the Danube in particular, (or) using the railways, to try to get the grain out in smaller quantities than we’ll be able to do with a giant convoy through… . Black Sea,” he said.

“We are looking at all possible options,” he added.
