These are the nuclear plants “Emsland” in Lower Saxony, Izar 2 in Bavaria and Neckarwestheim in Baden-Württemberg, which, according to the current plan, would end their operation on December 31, 2022. The publication cites an assessment by a government official in Berlin which states that “nuclear plants are safe until December 31st and will remain safe after December 31st”.
On Tuesday night, a German government spokesman denied the WSJ report, saying “the federal government has not yet made a decision on the three nuclear plants” and “that will happen once the results of the ongoing stress tests are known.” . In a more categorical style, a spokesman for the Ministry of Economy in Berlin states that the WSJ report is “untrue and without basis”.
Different views on “co-government“
It is known that, among other scenarios for dealing with the energy crisis, the current government under Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Solz is now also considering the possibility of an extension for nuclear plants. Much of the ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) sees such a development positively, as does the Liberal Party (FDP), which also participates in the governing coalition. The Green Party has a different opinion, but even there the relevant debate is rekindling. “If we reach borderline situations, if even hospitals can’t function normally, then we will also consider this possibility,” says the “green” deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Kathryn Göring ¨Eckhardt, in a television show.
Speaking to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, Chancellor Solz admits that “nuclear energy is not a sustainable form of energy”, but adds that “a stress test is currently being carried out, in which we are looking at whether the operation of the nuclear power plants could be extended for a while nuclear plants”. According to recent data, the three nuclear plants that continue to operate currently contribute only 6.4% of the electricity consumed throughout the country, while natural gas represents 10.1% and renewable energy sources 51.6%.
