The arrival of an extratropical cyclone can cause heavy rains in Minas Gerais, mainly in the southern region of the state.
The information is from the State Civil Defense Coordination (Cedec) and the Minas Gerais Meteorology and Water Resources System (Simge).
Preventive actions for possible intense rain begin this Thursday (24).
Although the cyclone will not directly reach the state, it will intensify the convergence of moisture along with a cold front, causing heavy rain and gusts of wind in a large part of Minas.
“This cold front will be coupled with an extratropical cyclone over the sea and, with the wind patterns in the higher layers of the atmosphere, will favor the convergence of moisture or moisture channel from the Amazon region to the Southeast, causing heavy rains and severe weather with strong gusts of wind on the surface and hail in areas of the state of Minas Gerais”, explains Heriberto dos Anjos, meteorologist at the Minas Gerais Institute of Water Management (Igam).
The forecast until Saturday (26) is for severe storms in most regions of Minas Gerais, especially in the Triângulo Mineiro/Alto Paranaíba, South of Minas, West, Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, Zona da Mata and Vale do Rio Doce.
In several regions, significant rainfall accumulations of between 50 and 80 millimeters are expected.
Civil Defense reinforced that all regions of Minas Gerais are monitored 24 hours a day to guarantee the protection of the population.
“Continuous monitoring allows us to act quickly to issue alerts and coordinate preventive actions, minimizing the impacts of climate events”, states the State Civil Defense Coordinator, Colonel PM Paulo Roberto Bermudes Rezende.
In cases of heavy rain, the state Civil Defense recommends that the population follow the following recommendations:
- Don’t cross the flood
- Change your route to avoid places with a history of flooding
- Do not park the vehicle near poles or trees
- In case of lightning, seek shelter in buildings and vehicles and avoid staying under trees. If you are outdoors and without shelter, stay crouched with your feet together and head down, staying as low as possible
- If you hear sounds of cracking in the ground or notice earth movement, immediately leave the affected area and do not return to the area until clearance has occurred.
- In case of heavy rain, only move forward if the water is below the middle of the wheels. If the water exceeds the middle of the door, climb onto the roof and use your seat belt to brace yourself. Don’t underestimate the power of water
- Do not throw trash and rubbish in the street, as they can block drainage networks and clog drains.
- In case of emergency, call: 190 PMMG, 193 Firefighters, 199 Civil Defense
