To the high temperatures in Rio de Janeiro are related to increased mortality in the city, indicated a survey by a doctoral student from the Sergio Arouca National School of Public Health (ENSP/Fiocruz).
THE risk is higher for the elderly and people with some pre -existing diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, as well as Alzheimer’s, kidney failure and urinary tract infections.
In the study, developed by the doctoral student João Henrique de Araújo, all 466,000 natural death records between 2012 and 2024 were analyzed, as well as over 390,000 deaths caused by 17 causes – 12 of them had a considerable high mortality for elderly in the extreme heat.
The data were analyzed according to the heat level classification (NC) of the Rio de Janeiro City Protocol. The levels range from 1 to 5 and indicate the risks and actions that must be taken.
The heat level 4, when the temperature is greater than 40 ° C for four hours or more, led to a up 50% in mortality from diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and renal failure between the elderly according to the research.
In the case of level 5, with a temperature of 44 ° C for at least two hours, the same increase is observed and aggravated according to the increase of hours.
“The study confirms that at these extreme levels defined in the protocol the health risk is real,” said the author of the study.
The study cites the death of young Ana Clara Benevides after sick before the show of singer Taylor Swift in November 2023 in Rio de Janeiro. That day, the heat rate in the city was over 44 ° C for eight hours.
The next day the death of the young woman was recorded another record: 151 deaths of elderly for specific causes.
Climatic emergency
The doctoral student warned of the effects of climate change and the need for adaptation of cities, citing the actions taken in the state capital.
“It is expected that actions taken in the heat protocol of the municipality of Rio, such as the availability of hydration and cooling points, adaptation of work activities, constant communication with the population and suspension of risk activity at more critical levels are widespread and adopted also in other municipalities. ”
The problem is global, as 2024 was the first year to exceed the 1.5 ° C mark of the planet’s average temperature increase compared to pre-industrial levels, according to Copernicus, the European Union Land Observation Program.
High in medical care for heat
The city of Rio de Janeiro is in the midst of a heat wave, with temperatures close to 40 ° C.
The municipal secretary of health, Daniel Soranz, said on Sunday (16) that about 3,000 people were served with heat -related problems in January.
The holder of the folder adds that the biggest concern is with children and the elderly, since, according to him, they have less sensation of thirst. The secretary reported that two babies have already been hospitalized this year with problems also related to high temperatures.
“We had hospitalization of two babies because they have excess and already dehydrated clothes. It is mainly important that first -time mothers are attentive, ”he added.
