The history of extreme heat faced by Brazil in 2024 could gain a new chapter. According to forecasts from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) and Climatempo, temperatures are expected to rise again across the country starting this Saturday (7), with the possibility of historic records in some capitals.
According to information from Inmet, the forecast is that 19 capitals will have maximum temperatures of 30°C or more during Independence Day. The highest temperatures are expected to occur in Midwest and in the North in Cuiabá (MT, 40°C), Palmas (TO, 39°C) and Porto Velho (RO, 38°C).
In the region Southeast Friday (6) was milder. Despite this, with the exception of Vitória (ES, 28°C), all capitals should also be above 30°C during the weekend:
- Sao Paulo (SP): 30°C on Saturday, 32°C on Sunday
- Rio de Janeiro (RJ): 30°C on Saturday, 33°C on Sunday
- Belo Horizonte (MG): 32°C on Saturday, 31°C on Sunday
Node South the weather will be less hot over the weekend, but tends to rise over the next few days. In Florianópolis (SC), temperatures should remain around 23°C this Saturday, but with a forecast of a gradual increase until reaching 30°C next Wednesday (11).
The same goes for Porto Alegre (RS), with a maximum of 26°C for Saturday and 38°C for Wednesday. Although with less variation, the temperature is also expected to rise in Curitiba (PR): the forecast is that the thermometers will go from 29°C to 32°C, in the same period.
Node North East some of the capitals also have predicted maximums of or above 30°C, such as Fortaleza (CE, 31°C), João Pessoa (PB, 31°C), Natal (RN, 30°C), São Luís (MA, 33°C) and Teresina (PI), with the fourth highest maximum forecast, of 37°C.
Dry air and lack of rain continue
According to Climatempo, the hot weather and dry air are expected to continue at least until the end of next week. According to the institute’s forecast, until next Thursday (12) the humidity in the air is expected to vary between 20% and 12% in the central area of the country – an average that is below that observed in the Sahara desert.
Throughout the month, most of the country is also expected to have below-average rainfall. In the northern states, rainfall is expected to be between 30mm and 40mm below the historical average. In the Central-West and Southeast regions, rainfall is expected to be between 10mm and 30mm.
In the east of the Northeast region and in parts of the South region, rainfall should remain within the average for the period.
The fires, already at a high volume, could also increase even further.
