Extreme rain: Porto Alegre has the wettest month since measurements began in 1916

Storms are expected to hit Rio Grande do Sul againSeptember 2023 is already the wettest month in the city of Porto Alegre since 1916, when regular measurements began. The calculations were made by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

Until Tuesday (26), Inmet had recorded 413.8 mm of rain in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The number represents almost triple the city’s normal average rainfall for the month of September, which is approximately 148 mm.

A new extratropical cyclone forms off the coast of the southern region of Brazil on Wednesday (27), causing storms and reinforcing weather instability in Rio Grande do Sul, according to MetSul Meteorologia.

The formation of the phenomenon occurs due to an area of ​​low pressure that moved from Argentina and Paraguay to the region on Tuesday (26).

According to Inmet, the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre is under yellow alert for potential danger of storms this Wednesday morning (27). The forecast is for rainfall of up to 50 mm and winds of up to 60 km/h, with a risk of hail. The institute also has a warning for the intensification of coastal winds in the area.

City Hall closes Guaíba floodgates

Porto Alegre City Hall ordered, on Monday (25), the closure of the Guaíba River floodgate system. The announcement was made by the mayor of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Sebastião Melo (MDB), on social media.

“The measure takes into account the forecast of more rain in Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to the south wind damming the water. The operation begins this afternoon at gates 3, of the Court of Auditors, and 4, of Avenida Sepúlveda. We are monitoring the measurements and have teams mobilized to act as necessary”, wrote the mayor.
