The coordinator of the Center for Natural Disasters, Marcelo Seluchi, said in an interview with CNN this Monday (18) that “extreme temperatures should be recurrent in the future”, when commenting on the heat wave that hits Europe.
“This situation could become more and more likely because the temperature of the planet is increasing. Reports and research indicate that northern Europe will be one of the most affected regions,” said Seluchi.
“What is happening in Europe at this moment is the establishment of an area of very intense and long-lasting high atmospheric pressure, which causes clear skies and no precipitation,” he said.
The coordinator explained that, with more hours of sunshine and shorter nights, the “warming during the day is greater than the cooling at night” on the continent. As the situation has persisted, Seluchi pointed out that “every day the temperature has risen a little more”.
The hot, dry air that reaches Europe from the Sahara desert is also one of the factors that helps explain the extreme climate, according to Seluchi.
