The extreme weather events recorded in 2023 are “a sample of the future”, in the assessment of climatologist Karina Bruno Lima.
A CNN Radio she explained that anthropogenic, that is, human-caused, global warming “makes extreme events more likely and extensive.”
Furthermore, the El Niño climate phenomenon also “favors rising temperatures, in addition to rain in the South and drought in the North.”
However, the expert made the reservation that El Niño “contributes [para os eventos extremos]but it is not the main factor.”
Karina Bruno Lima recalled that the Paris Agreement aims to curb global warming by up to 1.5ºC – currently, the level is 1.2ºC – by 2030.
However, she reinforces that the issue “needs to become a priority” on the entire world’s agenda.

“We have little time to resolve this climate emergency. (…) 2030 is a key goal”, he added.
She sees the world moving towards changing the energy matrix, but at an unsatisfactory speed: “The window of opportunity is closing”.
