It is the second Superluna of the year, there are four in a row between spring and summer 2022, all to be seen in the summer sky. That of June 14 is the last one before the summer solstice. In the culture of the ancient peoples of North America it was the Strawberry Moon because it coincided with the time of the strawberry harvest. The European tradition defines it instead of mead, a drink that comes from the fermentation of honey that was given to couples in the first month of their wedding.
The satellite on that day will be located 363808 km away from the Earth, the perigee which is the minimum distance. In the alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon, the latter appears larger and brighter than usual. For this it is called Superluna or more correctly Luna Full al Perigee. The following are July 13, called the deer, and August 12, called instead of the sturgeon.
“The Superluna will appear approximately 7% larger and a little brighter than average, but only an expert observer could realize it, ”says Gianluca Masi, astrophysicist, scientific director of the Virtual Telescope Project. “These are not exactly striking variations, which nevertheless add charm to the event, a precious opportunity to admire our natural satellite in the context of the night sky, an increasingly neglected and forgotten landscape”.

The moments of greatest visibility of the Superluna are at the rising of the Moon and at its waning, then at dusk and dawn. “During twilight, the remaining sunlight allows you to admire the Earth’s landscape as the full Moon rises or falls on the horizon. At night its light is very intense, almost dazzling, compared to the very discreet one of the panorama. At its rise or sunset, the Moon is projected behind buildings and elements of the landscape, generating the sensation that its disk is larger, but it is only an optical illusion, due precisely to the presence in the visual field of terms of comparison ».
The invitation is to go out and look at the sky after 9pm. The Virtual Telescope will film the Superluna as it rises on the horizon of Rome, sharing the vision live. The live broadcast is scheduled from 9.00pm and 3.00pm.
