Yesterday, the US government sued EZ Lynk for selling tens of thousands of devices that allowed car and truck owners to turn off computerized emission controls in their vehicles at the touch of a button.
In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan, the US Department of Justice has accused EZ Lynk of violating federal clean air law since 2016 by selling EZ Lynk systems to truck drivers Ford, GMC, Chrysler and other vehicles.
The lawsuit said the system includes a device that connects to vehicle computers to install software, a cloud platform that stores the software, and an app that allows drivers to buy and install software using smartphones.
According to court documents, the Cayman Islands company “actively encourages” drivers to use the EZ Lynk system, including through an online forum where drivers praise the product, and some EZ Lynk representatives even offer technical support.
“Controlling the emissions of cars and trucks protects the public from the harmful effects of air pollution,” said US Attorney Audrey Strauss in a statement. “EZ Lynk is putting public health at risk by manufacturing and selling devices designed to disable these emission controls.”
Plaintiff is seeking penalties for violating the Clean Air Act and an injunction against further sales and installation of the EZ Lynk system.
