The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) extended until May 6 the deadline for miners to voluntarily leave the Yanomami indigenous land in private planes.
Last week, the federal government had established that takeoffs in the region for this purpose could take place until this Monday (23).
The FAB did not inform the reason for the extension. In a press release, he limited himself to reinforcing that the measure is part of actions against irregular mining in the region.
“The aircraft will be authorized to fly as long as they remain within the established lateral and vertical limits”, highlights the text.
There is no official data on the number of garimpeiros who were working in Yanomami land, but Ibama and Funai estimate that, before the operation launched in recent days, there were around 20,000.
In addition to departing by air, on chartered planes, people leaving the region can travel across rivers. Vessels, without the presence of cargo, are authorized to continue their journey to fetch miners and other indigenous people.
Illegal mining is pointed out as the main responsible for the humanitarian and health crisis that affects the Yanomami. The use of mercury in the illegal extraction of gold, for example, is pointed out as a factor in the contamination of the rivers used by the indigenous people for water and food, causing illness and malnutrition.
