Face Pay payment system launched at all Moscow metro stations

Today, September 20, the Telegram channel of the Moscow Department of Transport officially announced that the last five stations of the Moscow metro were connected to a system that allows users to pay for travel by scanning their face on a special device. At the moment, the Face Pay system is installed at 241 metro stations (on all 14 lines), but it works in testing mode, so anyone who wants to come up and pay for the fare with their own person will not be able to. To do this, you must first apply for participation in the testing program on the official website of “Moscow Transport”.

After completing a simple registration process, the user will receive simple instructions on how to connect to Face Pay – you need to install the Moscow Metro mobile application, and then bind a bank card or Troika card to your account. The next step is to upload a photo of the user’s face – it is this item that allows the person to go through the payment on a special scanner. Naturally, these devices are not installed on all turnstiles – where they are, special stickers are glued on the floor indicating the presence of a face scanner. Passing through such a turnstile, the user will need to scan his face, after which the system will automatically debit the money for the trip from the card.

Of course, the system requires further work and fixes for issues that the Department of Transportation plans to identify during Face Pay testing. For example, the scanning and matching system for a photo in an application may not always work the first time. But when the technology is brought to perfection, a similar payment mechanism is planned to be introduced at the MCC, MCD and even in land transport. And to encourage those wishing to switch to a new payment method, Deptrans promises to introduce discounts on travel for those who pay via Face Pay.
