Face recognition in the car: Genesis V60 will be the first model with this feature

To start the engine of a modern car, it has long been no longer necessary to insert the key into the ignition – technology has long allowed this operation to be performed by pressing a button if the key is within reach. In addition, some cars can be opened, locked and started from a smartphone, and Tesla or Rivian, for example, have special key cards (which look like regular credit cards) that you need to put on the door to unlock the vehicle. But the developers from Genesis decided to go much further – they developed an analogue of Face ID for cars.

The technology works quite simply – after purchasing a car, the user will need to go through the process of setting up the vehicle by scanning their face. After that, you can forever forget about the existence of a key or key card – in order to open the car, close it or start the power plant, you just need to walk to the door, scan your face and go. And the first car to support this feature will be the Genesis GV60 model, a premium urban crossover that is the flagship among the brand’s new products. No one on the market has a similar function at the moment.

The company called its analogue of Face ID Face Connect – to implement the function, a special sensor with an image processing controller that can learn will be installed on the door. So far, the manufacturer does not specify what this will give in practice, but it is likely that the learning of the system is necessary to increase the level of security. Also, a corresponding indicator will be installed next to the scanner, which will show the state of the car – whether Face Connect is working or not, whether the door is open and stuff like that. In theory, the function will be incredibly useful, since the key can always be forgotten or lost, but not your face.

Of course, potential buyers are primarily concerned about the degree of protection of this method. Genesis said that it is impossible to deceive or hack the system – Face Connect technology uses a special security chip to store the user’s biometric data. Due to the fact that the company has abandoned cloud storage or a central server, there is no way to get user data or intercept the signal, which means that the chances of hacking are much less. And if the technology will work as accurately as Face ID on the iPhone, then you really should not worry.
