Apple charges a 30% commission on software and digital products purchased from the App Store. This means that developers have to share revenue with Apple. To get around Apple’s commission, Instagram plans to encourage developers to connect offline with brands and others.
According to Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, Facebook plans to create offline trading opportunities for developers to avoid the 30 percent commission charged by Apple.
Apple insists on charging a 30% commission for digital transactions on the iOS platform. For transactions that take place on iOS, we will have to follow their rules. But in general, we’ll be looking for other ways to help developers make a living and facilitate transactions elsewhere. For example, if we can help brands and developers find each other, they can conduct these transactions offline. For affiliate marketing, this is a real product, not a digital product. Therefore, we will strive to get closer to the place where developers can really make a stable living.
Facebook hasn’t gotten along well with Apple in the past few years. Facebook announced on Monday that it will not charge content creators until 2023.
