Facebook announces it will reduce political content in the news feed

Facebook announced this Thursday (7th) that it will reduce political content in the platform’s news feed. The change in the way content is distributed, three months before the elections, took place after tests were carried out to analyze user demand.

“After we tested this Facebook ranking change in Brazil in response to feedback from people who wanted to see less political content in their feeds, starting today we will place less emphasis on comments and shares to determine the distribution of political content on Facebook in the country” , the company said in a statement.

In May of this year, Meta – the company that manages Facebook – said it would reduce the weight of comments and shares for distributing political content; the decision would also have been made after carrying out tests in response to the opinion of users who would like to see less political content on the network.

“When we asked people who had experienced this change, they told us they saw less content in their feeds that they didn’t find valuable. Based on these results, we are expanding testing globally,” Meta said in a statement released in May.

According to the company, the positive feedback from people who no longer wanted to see political content on the platform made Facebook expand this measure in other countries, such as Costa Rica, Sweden, Spain and Ireland.
