Mark Zarkerberg and Facebook would probably like to have a delete button for their timeline now that it threatens an upcoming TV show with a lawsuit for possible tarnishing the brand’s reputation. The trouble for the social media giant after leak of documents for his involvement in the 2016 elections they have no end.
“Doomsday Machine” is the upcoming TV adaptation of “An Ugly Truth”, a book that reveals his mistakes Facebook on issues such as misinformation, hate speech, user safety. The program will star Claire Foy as Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO, and will address the chaos surrounding misinformation during the 2016 election, as well as more recent controversies such as the XCheck program, which has allowed celebrities and other high-profile personalities to bypass content surveillance.
As the series begins to take shape, Facebook is threatening the producers of “Anonymous Content” with a lawsuit and using Britney Spears lawyers to do so (via Deadline). According to Deadline, Mathew Rosengart, the same lawyer who helped free Britney Spears from her father’s supervision, sent a letter to Anonymous Content CEO Dawn Olmstead, detailing the legal action Facebook could take if false statements or exaggerations about the company appear on the show.

What does the “threatening” Facebook letter contain?
According to a letter received by Deadline, Rosengart states that “the First Amendment to the Constitution does not knowingly protect false statements or misrepresentations, or those made with the reckless contempt of the truth, even for public figures.”
He goes on to attack An Ugly Truth, noting that it is “full of false and defamatory statements, descriptions and allusions to Facebook and its leadership”. If Anonymous Content decides to put any of these so-called fakes in its TV adaptation, Rosengart says “Facebook will take all appropriate legal action.”

Rosengart even said that Facebook is willing to work with Anonymous Content to ensure that the series is “accurate and true”.
This may be one of the few times that Facebook is actively trying to crush its “opponent”, given Facebook’s long history of being on the opposite side of the aisle sitting on the defendant’s stool.
