Meta said this Monday (9) that it is removing from its platforms content supporting or exalting the attack against the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasília, by Bolsonarist protesters on Sunday (8).
Tens of thousands of radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro destroyed the Alvorada Palace, the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court in an attack that lasted more than three hours the day before.
“Prior to the election, we designated Brazil as a temporary high-risk location and removed content that advocated people taking up arms or storming Congress, the presidential palace and other federal buildings,” said a spokesperson for Meta, parent company of Brazil. Facebook and Instagram.
“We are also designating this a breach event, which means we will be removing content that supports or extols these actions,” the spokesperson said. “We are actively monitoring the situation and will continue to remove content that violates our policies.”
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office on January 1 after defeating Bolsonaro in the second round of the election in October.
Bolsonaro refused to accept defeat and coup groups have been organizing through social networks and messaging platforms, such as Twitter, Telegram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook, to organize terrorist acts like those perpetrated the day before.
STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered social networks to block users who disseminate coup-like content.
The invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers on Sunday was planned for at least two weeks by Bolsonaro supporters through groups on messaging platforms such as Telegram and Twitter.
Messages seen by Reuters throughout the week show members of these groups organizing meeting points in several cities across the country, from where chartered buses would leave for Brasília, with the intention of attacking public buildings.
During the Capitol attack by supporters of Donald Trump in January 2021, social media companies were criticized for not doing enough to prevent the organization of terrorist groups sympathetic to the former US president, an ally of Bolsonaro, who has been in Florida since the end of last year.
