The social networking team Instagram, which is part of Facebook, has begun to develop a new feature that will make the service even closer to the WhatsApp messenger.

Currently, Instagram’s two-factor / two-step authentication is only possible through specialized apps like Google Authenticator or via SMS.

But the developers are preparing an authentication function using the popular WhatsApp messenger, which is also part of the Facebook ecosystem. Thus, Instagram users will be able to receive authentication codes via WhatsApp.

Since the feature is still in development, it is not yet clear when it will become available to iOS and Android users on the stable versions of Instagram.
Note that two-factor authentication is currently optional on Instagram, regardless of the selected method for obtaining codes.
