Fachin: “Authoritarian minds use disinformation to miseducate”

The president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Minister Edson Fachin, said this Wednesday (15) that “authoritarian minds use disinformation to miseducate and that it is up to democratic minds to monitor and educate for citizen peace”.

The statement was given at the National Meeting of Electoral Judicial Schools.

“The quality of democracy is directly linked to the strengthening of democratic institutions. The Constitution is not a norm that is born only once, it is a normative text that is reconstituted and reborn in the institutional, social and political practices of the nation that constitutes it”, he said.

For the minister, undemocratic minds and hearts are minds and hearts that have suffered a process of de-education for citizenship.

“In other words, we could speak of ‘political literacy’ – a teaching-learning process in which knowledge, skills and values are developed that enhance citizen practice, including the choice of representatives through voting; and also – it is important to point out – the possibility of being voted on and of assuming the responsibility of an elective term”, he said.

According to Fachin, what is observed today in the democratic world is a negative perception of political activity and politicians.

“And this negative perception has been transferred, in a sometimes radical way, to the institutions themselves, calling into question the democratic value itself. There is a sown misconception that sows a scenario of apathy and fosters political intolerance. And more: it makes the vote a bargaining chip and the mandate the exercise of mere dispatchers of power”, he said.

For the minister, confronting authoritarian deconstruction in Brazil is imperative in the defense of constitutional legality.
