Fachin meets with Telegram representative at the TSE

The president of the Superior Electoral Court, Minister Edson Fachin, meets in the late afternoon of this Monday (7), with a Telegram representative in the country. The meeting will be held at the TSE itself at 5:30 pm.

According to Fachin’s agenda, it is an “institutional visit” by the representative to the president of the TSE.

The messaging app was the last to sign an agreement with the Brazilian Electoral Court, after a series of attempts last year and earlier this year.

The negotiations only advanced after Minister Alexandre de Moraes determined the suspension of the application, in March this year. At the time, Moraes responded to a request from the Federal Police motivated by the failure to comply with several judicial decisions by Telegram.

The founder of Telegram, Russian Pavel Durov, then said that a problem with emails would have made it impossible for the platform to contact the STF. Representatives of the application then opened a dialogue with both the STF and the TSE.

In May of this year, the platform made official the mutual collaboration agreement to tackle disinformation. It was Telegram’s first agreement with an electoral body in the world involving cooperation and concrete actions.

According to the document, which should be in effect until December 31, 2022, the partnership involves the creation of an official TSE channel on the platform to disseminate official information about the elections, support from the Telegram technical team for the development of a robot for clear up users’ doubts about the elections, as well as the development of a new functionality on the platform for marking content that contains false information.
