Facial hair removal: the main techniques

Not just legs, arms, armpits. The face also has to deal with the removal of game superfluous. These include the classic “mustaches” that spare no one, the eyebrows to be adjusted if necessary thanks to increasingly advanced and precise techniques, but also hairs that we sometimes find under the chin or in other areas of the face.

Relying on the hands of an expert is always the first rule to be adopted, especially since the skin of the face is more sensitive and delicate.

That is why, despite the do-it-yourself remedies (such as depilatory creams and strips) adopted in the closing period of salons and beauty centers, with the help of Laura Matzeu, owner of Grey’s Beauty, a Treatwell registered salon, we have taken stock of the most suitable methods for safe, long-lasting and effective removal.

FACIAL HAIR REMOVAL: DEPILATION vs EPILATION
“There are various methods of removing facial hair. The main ones are the hair removal with wax and hair removal with laser (which has now almost completely replaced the pulsed light). Epilation is definitive and acts on the hair bulb, while hair removal is not. It must be taken into account that the face has a more delicate and sensitive skin than the rest of the body and waxing is a fairly aggressive method. This is why it is especially not recommended for those with particularly thin skin, which tends to get irritated and with couperose. On the contrary, the laser gives only a small sensation of heat and can be used in case of couperose. This does not mean that everyone can do it: it is not possible in case of psoriasis, skin inflammation, acne, in the presence of moles or tattoos (for example those who have a lip tattoo). It is also not suitable in the presence of white / blonde hair, as the laser works with the pigment and therefore cannot eliminate light hair ».

ARAB WIRE, WAXES, ELECTROCOAGULATION
«Among the other remedies we also find the Arabic thread, a gentle technique on the skin that can also act well on hair, eliminating it completely and that can be used for eyebrows and mustaches. Among the waxes are also very popular Brazilian wax, that with zinc or cream of rice and sugar paste that have the characteristic of adhering very well to the hair but not to the skin, facilitating the tear and making the latter less traumatic for the epidermis. Finally there is the‘electrocoagulation, a type of definitive epilation that involves longer times and is therefore used for small areas such as the eyebrows: it is carried out with a needle that reaches and destroys the hair, even light, at the root. It is good to keep in mind that to obtain results with the laser at least 10 sessions are necessary, while the duration (in terms of regrowth) of the other hair removal methods varies from 3 to 4 weeks ».

ERRORS TO AVOID
“The wrong tear is what is likely to cause the most damage. Attention must be paid not only to the direction of the hair, but also to the force of the tear, decisive but not too violent and the technique to make it, with tight skin that should not be “lifted”. Also there wax temperature is an aspect that must be taken into consideration: it must be hot but not too hot. If the wax is cold, in fact, it breaks the hair, while too hot it burns the skin. Cold streaks can be irritating: therefore pay attention to the reddened skin effect which can also last for some time. Any tearing not performed in a workmanlike manner only strengthens the hair with the consequence that the next time it will be like having passed the razor ».
