Fake news law can guarantee a risk-free democratic process

The Chamber of Deputies rejected the request for the Fake News Bill to move forward and be voted on urgently in the House Plenary. The text criminalizes the mass shooting of fake news, among other rules.

The proposal has been under debate among deputies since 2020. The proposal also provides that companies with more than 10 million users would be obliged to maintain a legal representative in the country to respond to justice, if necessary.

Some points of the new law, such as the criminalization of fake news, would take effect immediately after its approval. As a result, they would have an effect on candidates in the October elections.

To explain more details of the project if it should be put to a vote soon pparticipates in this episode Pedro Teixeira, reporter for CNN Brasil in Brasília. Researcher researcher at the Center for Teaching and Research in Innovation at FGV Direito São Paulo, and João Pedro Favaretto, talks about the risk of fake news for the democratic process.
