Fake profile network has almost 500 accounts created on social media, says Psafe

The cybersecurity company Psafe last week identified a network of fake profiles with nearly 500 accounts created on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram, with more than 654,000 followers and 2.5 million likes.

The discovery revealed that the objective was the application of scams using streaming platforms with a considerable user base, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney Plus.

Through internet pages, cybercriminals falsely offer free subscriptions to these streaming platforms, by registering on a fake website created to capture personal information and spread malware.

“Phishing messages can arrive via SMS, messaging apps or email. When clicking, the victim is directed to a fake website, where there is a registration form for the victim to receive the alleged free subscription code,” said Emilio Simoni, chief security officer at PSafe.

“However, the information provided by the victim in this false registration will be used later to apply new scams”, he added.

PSafe reported that among the possible damages caused to victims are theft of profiles on social networks, cloning of credit cards, and even loans in the victim’s name.

“The pages ask for personal data such as name, CPF, address, telephone number and may even ask for credit card or bank account data. With this data, cybercriminals can, for example, impersonate the victim in a messaging app asking for money or access social networks, scamming the contacts of these victims”, concluded Simoni.
