Fall in business confidence index reinforces deceleration, says economist

Business confidence dropped 1.8 percentage points in December, the lowest level since May, according to the FGV IBRE, in an index released this Thursday (30).

On average for the fourth quarter, the rate dropped 3.9 points from the previous quarter.

In an interview with CNN Radio, Rodolpho Tobler, economist at the Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), evaluated the result: “What we have seen at the end of 2021 is the economic slowdown. There was a worsening of the rates in the first quarter, due to the second wave of Covid-19, but with the advance of vaccination, it recovered. The fourth quarter indicates that it has slowed down.”

In the expert’s assessment, economic activity stopped growing at the same pace, in addition to industry and commerce, the service sector “shows a sign that it has also slowed down”.

“What worries us is that the prospects for 2022 are falling and the beginning of the year should be more complicated”, he added.

Despite the pandemic numbers being “less negative”, Rodolpho evaluates that Covid even “goes off the radar” of the entrepreneur, but that the “macroeconomic scenario is very fragile, with high inflation, high interest rates and reduced purchasing power.”

“It’s a combo of problems that affects the entrepreneur’s spirits for the coming months, as they are not easily resolved overnight,” he said.
