Fallout, the review of the TV series on Prime Video

After the example of The Last of Us, Also Fallout it stopped being just a video game and it was turned into a TV series. Available on Prime Video and created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, Fallout amazes and sweeps away any possible prejudice, making itself appreciated even by those who are not gamers. The distrust towards the series was more or less legitimate, given that some bad precedents of adapting video games to TV series and films, but there has never been any lack of hope of being able to see something new and freshthanks to the great success of The Last of Uswith which comparison is inevitable and recurring.

Fallout, developed by Jonathan Nolanbrother of Christopher and author of Westworld and Person of Interest, And Lisa Joy, takes us into a world dystopianwhere the evolution of nuclear technology led to the development of a society retrofuturisticwhere resources are scarce and are frequent wars and conflicts.

Fallout

Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins) he is an actor who falls victim to the nuclear bombings of 2077when the entire population is forced to take refuge inside the Vaultof the fallout shelters ready to host citizens in the event of a nuclear disaster. It was precisely in one of these shelters that he was born and grew up Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell)an ancient girl descendant of the first inhabitants of the Vaults, eager to escape from the underground world he has always inhabitedabandons it by venturing into the California devastated and wild that his ancestors had left 219 years earlierabout nine years after what happens in Fallout 4, the last chapter of the video game. What he finds on the outside is very different from what he imagined, the United States is still dealing with the damage from the bombings and the so-called «contaminated area» is full of disreputable characters.

Among these there is also Cooper Howard, aka the Ghoul, who has now become a bounty hunter, and Maximus (Aaron Moten), a member of Brotherhood of Steela military group that seeks to maintain peace and manage conflicts in the contaminated area. The Ghoul is by far the most absurd and funniest character in the series, being the only survivor of the bombings, will be the one from whom we will gain the most information on the world outside the vaults. As opposed to The Last of Us, Fallout tells an original story, not yet known within video gamesfor this reason it should be considered more as a sequels than a real transposition, as if the story followed its normal course but changed medium for a chapter.

The contrast between the Deserted Californiawhich at times recalls the settings of Mad Maxand style fiftiescreates a unique scenario, perfectly consistent with that of video games and extremely functional for the its new cinematic dimensionwhere every aesthetic aspect pays off Fallout even more interesting. There is no lack of action, the series is raw and violent but also tremendously sarcastic, throughout the series there is a tone of sympathy and comedy, totally opposite to the events, dramatic traits, that we see in the scenes. In this sense Walton Goggins, the actor who plays the Ghoul, is a true mastera character at times out of place, in the good sense of the term, who transforms into a real one western bandit and totally crazy.

The authors Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner they succeeded in the small feat of making a series which doesn't differ too much from the video game and who at the same time manages to have an autonomous life, without forcing viewers to know the previous original story. Fallout must be added to the list of successful experiments, deserves to be seen, even by those who are not too convinced or simply not accustomed to the genre, it could turn out to be a pleasant surprise.
