Families are proud to show their children’s vaccination book, says Dalcolmo

After predicting a “boom” of Covid-19 cases after the holiday season, pulmonologist and researcher at Fiocruz, Margareth Dalcolmo, warned of the peak of the Ômicron variant, which could happen in early February.

“Today we are on a rising curve of Ômicron cases. There are no other strains that may be present, and if there are, they are very minor compared to Ômicron, which has a high transmission rate here in Brazil. In February, with 30, 40 days after the intense circulation of the variant, we are already predicting the peak”, explained Dalcolmo.

Without specifying whether Carnival, a party celebrated next month but postponed by Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to April, would take place during the peak of the variant, Dalcolmo defended the decision of “great sensitivity” on the part of school leaders and authorities. and the mayors of both cities who decided to change the dates of the parades.

“I believe that Carnival would be after the peak we predicted, it is not possible to know for sure, but Rio and São Paulo made the sensible decision. We hope that by April (date of the parades), we will have more vaccinated and the children of the country will already be immunized with the second dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 “.

This week Fiocruz released the Vacinakids survey indicating that 80% of parents want to vaccinate their children against Covid-19. The data were brought forward to the CNN in December. More than 15,000 respondents were heard.

For the researcher, who became a representative of the country, in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the result reveals the parents’ confidence in immunization and the safety that the vaccine represents.

“Parents trust the vaccine. What I understand: many Brazilian families are proud to show their children’s complete vaccination record. I see this all the time. The adherence (child immunization) is very high and I am happy”, concluded Dalcolmo.

Childhood vaccination was the focus of discussions in the country throughout the week. Last Friday (21), the Ministry of Health decided to use doses of Coronavac in the immunization of children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years against the coronavirus. States and counties that stock Coronavac are authorized to immunize children with batches of vaccine.

The Ministry of Health also announced the sending of an emergency shipment of vaccines for children to states with stocks below 40,000 doses for application to children. At least 12 states were in this situation: Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Amapá, Acre, Pará, Roraima, Tocantins, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná and Santa Catarina.
