Relatives of victims of the Kiss fire, a tragedy that turned 10 on Friday (27), plan to sue Netflix after the release of “Every Day the Same Night”series that portrays the event.
The nightclub fire killed 242 people and left another 636 injured in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, in January 2013.
A group of around 40 families hired lawyer Juliane Muller Korbm to represent them in the case against Netflix.
THE CNN Juliane stated that the families complain about the commercial exploitation of the tragedy by the streaming platform, “which did not even have the sensitivity to inform them that a drama series would be produced”.
The production, based on the book of the same name by journalist Daniela Arbex, mixes reality with fiction. In the trailer for the series, the actors reproduce the scene of several bodies laid out on the floor of a gymnasium for recognition by family members.
“Many parents did not have the structure to enter the gym with all those bodies and recognize their children, many never had the structure until today to see the images of the bodies and this scene is shown in the trailer for the series”, said the lawyer.
“The request for Netflix is for some exposure adaptations, especially the trailer, and that the series is not just commercially exploited. We need to deal with social responsibility for the pain of these parents. At what cost can a streaming platform profit from a tragedy like this?”, she said.
Before formalizing a judicial representation, the group of family members guided by the lawyer intends to dialogue with Netflix.
Also according to the lawyer, the family members of the group did not request any type of compensation from the streaming platform.
Another group that forms the Association of Relatives of Victims and Survivors of the Tragedy of SM reported that it has nothing to do with the case.
wanted by CNN Netflix did not respond as of the date of publication of this text.
