The family of Doron Steinbrecher, one of the three hostages released this Sunday (19), thanked the people of Israel and the president-elect of the USA, Donald Trump, for the Israeli’s release.
“After 471 unbearable days, our beloved Dodo has finally returned to our arms. We want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who supported us and accompanied us throughout this journey,” the family said in a statement released by the Forum for Hostages and Missing Families.
“A special thank you to the people of Israel for their warm embrace, unwavering support and the strength they gave us during our darkest times,” the family said.
“We also extend our gratitude to President Trump for his significant involvement and support, which has meant so much to us,” they added.
The family said Steinbrecher, 31, would now begin his “rehabilitation journey.”
Who are the hostages?
The hostages are: Romi Gonen (24), Doron Steinbrecher (31) and Emily Damari (28), a dual Israeli-British citizen.
Gonen was 23 years old when she was kidnapped from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023. Her family said she was shot in the hand during the attack.
According to his mother, Meirav Leshem Gonen, some hostages who were held alongside Gonen and later released reported that their injuries worsened during their captivity. Israeli media cited her family as confirming that she is on the list.
Steinbrecher, a veterinary nurse, was 30 when she was kidnapped from her apartment on kibbutz Kfar Aza, near the Gaza border. A video showing her alongside two other kidnapped women was released by Hamas in January last year.
Family members raised concerns about his health after viewing the footage, with Doron’s brother, Dor Steinbrecher, telling CNN that she needed daily medication that she was unlikely to receive while in captivity.
Damari was kidnapped from her home in Kfar Aza when she was 27 years old. Her mother, Mandy Damari, previously said her daughter was “shot in the hand, wounded by shrapnel in the leg, blindfolded, placed in the back of her own car” and taken to Gaza.
She is the only remaining British citizen detained.
