The family of young Thaís Medeiros, 26, who suffered irreversible brain damage after smelling pepper, managed to buy a house in Goiás with money from donations made through a fundraiser.
According to a post made by Thaís' family on social media, the property where the girl currently lives is on the second floor and has narrow stairs, which makes movement and care difficult.
The new house, according to the family, “is small, but it is enough” to meet the young woman’s needs. The property will still have to undergo a small renovation to adapt the space.
“In about a month or so we’ll be able to move, God willing,” said Adriana Medeiros, Thaís’ mother. The girl was hospitalized again at the beginning of this month for treatment of an intestinal infection. “We’ll be home soon, God willing,” said Adriana.
The fundraiser to fund intensive treatment with neuromodulation for Thaís was opened in December last year and, according to the website where it is organized, raised R$317,400 by March 31st, the date on which it was closed.
How was the accident
In February 2023, Thaís was having lunch at her then-boyfriend's house when she smelled a jar containing pickled peppers. She, who is asthmatic, had a severe allergic reaction, suffered a cardiac arrest and was admitted to the ICU.
Faced with the condition, the young woman no longer had neurological responses and was diagnosed with cerebral edema, with irreversible damage.
