Family sentenced for breaking into US Capitol on January 6

A Texas family of five was convicted Wednesday of storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, with both parents arrested and three adult children on probation and home confinement.

The Munn family of Borger, Texas, was among the first to enter the Capitol on Jan. 6, climbing through a broken window and through the crypt and visitor center before entering a Senate conference room, according to their officials. sentence memos.

Parents Dawn and Thomas Munn were reprimanded by DC Chief Judge Beryl Howell for bringing four of their eight children – three adults and a minor child – to Washington with the intention of investigating the 2020 election results.

Before she was sentenced, Dawn Munn said she was in Washington to get answers on whether the 2020 election was safe.

“I was looking for someone to show me proof that our election would be secure,” said Dawn Munn. “If we don’t have a safe election, we don’t have a country. This is a country by the voice of the people”.

Howell said that did not justify the violence. “There is no doubt that it can justify the interruption of the democratic process,” said Howell.

In explaining his reason for traveling to DC, Thomas Munn told the judge that he had never been a politician before, but “I kept watching what was happening on the news and felt like we should speak up.”

Dawn and Thomas Munn were sentenced to 14 days behind bars. Their adult children, Kayli, Joshua and Kristi, were sentenced to probation and some home confinement.

Prior to the attack on the Capitol, Thomas Munn had encouraged others to travel to DC on January 6 through social media posts, and following the riot, several of the Munns posted on social media that they were on the Capitol that day. “These were fighting words that only contributed to the misinformation about January 6th,” Howell said of some of his posts.

Kristi Munn, the oldest of eight Munn children, was given 90 days of house arrest in addition to parole. Howell said Kristi, as a mother of three, possessed the judgment to realize that she was involved in criminal activities and could have made her own decision not to enter the Capitol.

“I wish I had slowed down,” Kristi Munn said as she addressed the courthouse on Wednesday. “I really want to set a better example for my brothers”;

Joshua Munn had an unnamed physical illness as a child that left him temporarily paralyzed for an unspecified period of time. He has been physically disabled ever since and this was highlighted by Howell, who went on to accuse Dawn Munn of being a nurse and mother and still “forcing” her son to march on Capitol Hill.

Howell emphasized that it was the responsibility of parents to set a better example for their children.
