A deadly, mass famine in the Gaza Strip would likely accelerate violence and almost certainly lead to a protracted conflict, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said today, testifying before a Senate committee. “It will accelerate the violence, it will have the effect of ensuring that there will be a long-term conflict,” Austin told the Armed Services Committee. “It doesn't have to happen (…) We will continue to do everything we can, and are already doing, to encourage the Israelis to provide humanitarian aid,” he added. Six months after the start of Israel's military operation in Gaza, the devastated Palestinian enclave is facing famine and disease while almost all residents are now homeless. Aid agencies complain that Israel is not ensuring access to food, medicine and other essential items, while EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell accused the Israeli government of using hunger as a weapon.
