Famous and samba schools mourn the death of Elza Soares

Several artists expressed their feelings to Elza Soares after confirming the singer’s death, aged 91, on Thursday afternoon (20). Samba schools also used social media to pay tribute to the artist.

CNN commentator João Carlos Martins said that Elza Soares always had a high spirits with the public, even in more complicated moments of her career.

“This spirit of optimism is part of an artist’s life when he is in front of his audience. Elza symbolized tuning, rhythm and swing. What she meant for the black community is something that not all artists have achieved to this day,” said the conductor.

Mano Brown also registered the tribute through social networks: “Brazilian music loses one of the greatest voices, go in peace Elza Soares”, wrote the rapper.

“Great Elza Soares, always fun. One of the greatest samba singers I’ve ever met, my darling, go with God”, revealed the singer Zeca Pagodinho in a video.

“Rest in peace Elza Soares, may God comfort the family, friends and fans!”, posted the singer Wesley Safadão.

Singer Maria Rita wrote: “an easily estimable loss: one of the greatest in our country rests, representative of the resistance and resilience of its people. dona elza, mission accomplished! and now our mission begins: always celebrate it! may this incredible woman of Light be received at a party…!

Elza Soares met Garrincha in the 1960s, with whom she had a son. They were together for 15 years and, throughout this period, Elza suffered from recurring episodes of domestic violence, reported years later. Like Elza, Garrincha also died on January 20, 1983.

The fact was remembered by the singer Zélia Duncan in the tribute she paid to Elza. “Elza Soares left, on the same day as Garrincha…it rains so hard outside there is no drop he doesn’t feel”, wrote Duncan.

The Botafogo club mourned the singer’s death and released a photo of Elza with Mané Garrincha, an alvinegro idol.

“Botafogo mourns the death of singer and songwriter Elza Soares, icon for Brazilian popular music, and ex-wife of Mané Garrincha, an alvinegro idol and greatest player of all time. By the irony of fate, she leaves us on January 20th, the same day that the star is gone.”

Red-black at heart, Elza Soares was also honored by Flamengo on social media.

“The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo deeply regrets the death of the magnificent singer Elza Soares. Red-black at heart, she left us on the same day that the star Garrincha, her great love, left 39 years ago.”

Caetano Veloso stated that Elza Soares “was an extraordinary concentration of energy and talent in the organism of Brazilian culture”. Caetano said he has been a fan of his voice and musicality since his high school years.

“I had the honor of being approached by her when she made her imminent decision to leave her career and/or Brazil. I was able to convince her to stay because I understood that this was some sort of cry for help. I composed the samba-rap “Língua” and invited her to sing the melodic part. So she went back to singing and receiving attention”, revealed Catano.

“He died in the glory to which he was entitled, at a respectable age, affirming the possible greatness of Brazil”, added the singer.

“We just lost the irreplaceable Elza Soares!!!”, posted Ney Matogrosso. “How sad!!!!”, wrote Gal Costa below a video she posted on Instagram, singing along with Elza.

Djavan wrote: “Brazil and the world today regret the passing of Elza Soares. What an artist, what a woman! Our deepest sympathies to all family, friends and fans.”

Actress Taís Araujo paid a touching tribute to the singer. Tais played Elza in theaters, in the movie “Garrincha – Estrela Solitário”, and claimed to have “lost an idol and gained an ancestor”.

“I honor Elza Soares. I honor the woman, the artist, the citizen, the friend. She is badass! Always has been and always will be! Tough on the fall, he taught us to lift our heads with each tumble and then follow. I lost an idol and gained a strong, firm ancestor, a light. I alternate tears with laughter, remembering the stories and I find myself thinking about the legacy left by Elza: head high and firm steps”, wrote Taís.

“Elza, Elza, Elza. Only tears right now. So much that I wanted to say and thank you but there are not enough words that can express how much I feel about your departure. Thank you for inspiring so much and for never shutting up. Thank you Goddess major.”, wrote the actor Lázaro Ramos on his social networks.

Actress Zezé Motta stated that “Elza is, Elza will always be eternal. Gratitude for your existence, your art and blackness. Lots of light in your path. Forever in the heart of Brazil.”

Samba schools

The samba schools also noted the importance of Elza Soares for the samba scene in Brazil. Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, which in 2020 brought the plot “Elza Deusa Soares” to the avenue, manifested itself a few minutes after the singer’s death was announced.

“You are the STAR! Your people have waited so long to see you again! And reviewed! You saw your independent love going through the Avenue in the most beautiful way possible! We can only thank you for everything. Dismayed! This is our farewell! Thank you Goddess. WE WILL NEVER SUCK!”, announced Mocidade on Twitter.

The Unidos da Vila Maria school wrote: “May the beautiful tribute made by you be one of the countless and beautiful memories of this great artist”, referring to the tribute of Mocidade.

Beija-Flor considered the singer’s death an immeasurable loss for Brazilian culture and music.

“Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, represented by its board and community, is mourning the death of singer Elza Soares, of natural causes, at the age of 91. The farewell of the artist, this Thursday, is, in the conception of the blue and white, an immeasurable loss for Brazilian culture and music, and also for the Carioca Carnival”, wrote the school.

Vai-Vai recalled, in her honor, the artist’s presence on the school’s court, and highlighted her fight against sexism, racism and moralism in Brazil.

“It is with extreme regret that we communicate the passing of @elzasoaresoficial one of the most important figures in the country at the age of 91! Elza was more than an excellent artist, she was a symbol in the fight against machismo, racism and moralism in Brazil. ”, said the Go Go.
