Several artists expressed their feelings to Elza Soares after confirming the singer’s death, aged 91, on Thursday afternoon (20). Samba schools also used social media to pay tribute to the artist.
CNN commentator João Carlos Martins said that Elza Soares always had a high spirits with the public, even in more complicated moments of her career.
“This spirit of optimism is part of an artist’s life when he is in front of his audience. Elza symbolized tuning, rhythm and swing. What she meant for the black community is something that not all artists have achieved to this day,” said the conductor.
Mano Brown also registered the tribute through social networks: “Brazilian music loses one of the greatest voices, go in peace Elza Soares”, wrote the rapper.
“Great Elza Soares, always fun. One of the greatest samba singers I’ve ever met, my darling, go with God”, revealed the singer Zeca Pagodinho in a video.
“Rest in peace Elza Soares, may God comfort the family, friends and fans!”, posted the singer Wesley Safadão.
Singer Maria Rita wrote: “an easily estimable loss: one of the greatest in our country rests, representative of the resistance and resilience of its people. dona elza, mission accomplished! and now our mission begins: always celebrate it! may this incredible woman of Light be received at a party…!
Elza Soares met Garrincha in the 1960s, with whom she had a son. They were together for 15 years and, throughout this period, Elza suffered from recurring episodes of domestic violence, reported years later. Like Elza, Garrincha also died on January 20, 1983.
The fact was remembered by the singer Zélia Duncan in the tribute she paid to Elza. “Elza Soares left, on the same day as Garrincha…it rains so hard outside there is no drop he doesn’t feel”, wrote Duncan.
The Botafogo club mourned the singer’s death and released a photo of Elza with Mané Garrincha, an alvinegro idol.
“Botafogo mourns the death of singer and songwriter Elza Soares, icon for Brazilian popular music, and ex-wife of Mané Garrincha, an alvinegro idol and greatest player of all time. By the irony of fate, she leaves us on January 20th, the same day that the star is gone.”

I alternate tears with laughter, remembering the stories and I find myself thinking about the legacy left by Elza: head high and firm steps”, wrote Taís.
