Fan dies and at least 4 are injured in fight before the classic between Flamengo and Vasco in RJ

One fan died and four others were injured after a fight between Vasco and Flamengo fans, near the Cosmos train station, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro this Sunday (22).

According to the Fire Department, the fans were victims of gunshots and stabbings. They were taken to Rocha Faria Municipal Hospital, in Campo Grande, also in the west zone.

The unit’s management informed the CNN that four firearm victims were admitted to the unit. One of them succumbed to her injuries and died as soon as she arrived at the hospital.

The other three victims are in stable health. A fifth patient, injured by a stab weapon, underwent suturing and has already been discharged from hospital.

According to the Military Police, a group of Vasco fans were heading towards Maracanã, when the train passed the train station in the Cosmos neighborhood. There, there was a confrontation with Flamengo fans.

Gunshots were heard by the train’s passengers. According to the PM, 70 suspects accused of involvement in the confusion were taken to the Special Supporters’ Court.

Firecrackers and dozens of wooden cables were seized. After the events at the station, police were reinforced and the train continued its journey.

In Rocha Miranda, military police arrested three people and seized 21 wooden cables. In Bairro Alto da Boa Vista, three wooden handles and a brass knuckle were collected.

In the Paciência neighborhood, three people were arrested and nine wooden cables were seized.

The PM had set up a special patrol scheme aimed at the game between Flamengo and Vasco, for the Brazilian Championship. There was no record of confusion around the match site between the two teams.

On the field, in Tite’s debut at Maracanã as coach of the red and black team, Flamengo won the classic 1-0. With the defeat, Vasco remains in the relegation zone of the championship.
