Tributes marked the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death in Paris on Wednesday (31). Fans placed flowers and left messages on the bridge over the underpass where she died in a car accident.
Flowers and photos of Diana adorned the gold-leafed Flame of Liberty, a replica of the Statue of Liberty’s torch at the northern end of the Pont de l’Alma that became her unofficial memorial in the French capital.
The princess was just 36 years old when the limousine carrying her and her boyfriend Dodi al-Fayed crashed into the tunnel below the bridge as it pulled away from photographers chasing her on motorcycles.
“Deja 25 ans (25 years already)”, read one of the cards left at the memorial, where a group of locals and tourists – surrounded by teams of media cameras – came to pay their respects, leave flowers and take pictures.
“Forever in our hearts,” read another with a photo of Diana left by someone who identified herself as Monique from Luxembourg.
Millions around the world mourned the death of the “people’s princess”, as then British Prime Minister Tony Blair described Diana in 1997.
When she died, she was one of the most recognized and photographed women in the world and a leading advocate for humanitarian causes – including children’s charities and landmine clearance.
The death of the mother of Princes William and Harry has plunged the monarchy into crisis, following the disintegration of her marriage to the heir to the throne, Prince Charles, with its revelations of bickering, adultery and the misery she felt in her royal role.
Diana’s continued fascination with her life was illustrated on Saturday, when a black Ford Escort she drove in the 1980s sold at auction in Britain for £724,500 ($844,000).
