A member of the Oath Keepers, a far-right US militia, admitted this Friday (29), during a hearing in federal court for the District of Columbia, that he was involved in a conspiracy during the attack on the Capitol on 6 of January last year.
Brian Ulrich, 44, has agreed to cooperate with investigators, giving prosecutors a victory as they prepare for a likely trial against the far-right group’s founder.
Ulrich was one of eleven Oath Keepers members charged with conspiracy in an indictment revealed in January.
Defendants in the case include Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the far-right militia. Some of those defendants are likely to be tried later this year.
This multi-defendant case is the only one alleging that the participants in the January 6 attack participated in a conspiracy, defined as an attempt to “overthrow, overthrow, or forcibly destroy the government of the United States.”
Ulrich is the second member of the Oath Keepers to plead guilty to conspiracy and obstruction charges. Joshua James, 34, of Alabama, pleaded guilty in March.
As part of the plea bargain, Ulrich agreed to cooperate with the US Department of Justice’s ongoing investigation.
Under US sentencing guidelines, Ulrich faces a likely sentence of about six years in prison, with credit for time already served.
US District Judge Amit Mehta, who will sentence Ulrich, is not bound by that range of guidelines. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled, and Ulrich will remain in federal custody for the time being.
