Farewell to Charlie Watts, drummer of the Rolling Stones

Charlie Watts, the drummer of the Rolling Stones, is gone: he was 80 years old and was recovering from surgery. A great fan of jazz, who continued to play alongside his activity with the Stones, Charlie Watts was the last of the members to join the band. It was not until January 1963 that he joined the band of Jagger, Richards, Wyman and Jones on a permanent basis, only to remain there until his death.

To give the news of the disappearance was a note released by his agent Bernard Doherty: «It is with immense regret that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts.

He went in peace today to a London hospital surrounded by family members. Charlie was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and, as a member of the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation. In this difficult time we ask that the privacy of family, band members and close friends be respected ».

Just a few weeks ago, the drummer announced that he would not be part of the US tour for health reasons Stones leaving in September. «He underwent a fully successful operation», the band’s statement read, «but the doctors prescribed him a rest period. Rehearsals for the tour will begin in a couple of weeks. It’s a real shame, but no one expected it. ” Charlie then wanted to add a touch of irony to the official note: “For once, my timing was slightly wrong.”

In 2003 in According to the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards had said: “Having had a drummer from the start who could play with Charlie Watts sensibility was one of the best hidden assets I’ve ever had, because I never had to think about what the drummer would do. I’ve always said “Charlie, that’s it, we move a little and that’s it”. I can throw ideas at him and I never have to worry about the rhythm… it’s a blessing ».

Solitary, of few words, unlike the other Stones never had a troubled love life. For him there has always been only his wife Shirley. “One of the best I’ve ever been there” is the memory now published on the Rolling Stones Instagram profile.
