He was the grandson of Luchino Visconti and a great author of images that have marked the world of fashion. His career took off between the ’80s and’ 90s and exploded in parallel with the boom of “Made in Italy”.
In those years, Gastel developed advertising campaigns for the most prestigious Italian fashion houses such as Versace, Missoni, Tod’s, Trussardi, Krizia, Ferragamo and many others. Fly to Paris where in the 90s he worked for Dior, Nina Ricci, Guerlain.
Although his career began in the fashion world, Gastel, photographer and poet, feels a particular call for purely artistic projects. At the end of the 2000s Giovanni Gastel explored the art of portraiture, including the faces of Barack Obama, Ettore Sottsass, Roberto Bolle and Marco Pannella. A selection of 200 portraits was on display at the Maxxi Museum in Rome in 2020, leading characters from the world of culture, design, art, fashion, music, entertainment and politics that Gastel himself met during his 40-year career.
