A group of farmers gathered in front of the European Commission in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on Wednesday (13) to protest against the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, the common market of several Latin American countries, including Brazil and Argentina.
“We have been fighting against the free trade agreement for decades,” said a young farmer taking part in the protest. The agreement is “based on competition and doesn’t really provide fair prices for farmers. So that’s the reason we’ve been protesting for months, for years and especially now,” he explained.
This is the latest of many protests organized in Brussels this year by farmers concerned about the arrival on the European market of low-cost products that do not meet the same environmental and social protection standards as the European Union.
The demonstration was called after media reported that the European Commission and Mercosur countries could try to conclude their long negotiations on the trade deal at a summit of the Latin American bloc in early December.
