FAS opened a case against Apple: the company does not inform about alternative payment methods in the AppStore

Today, on October 27, the Federal Antimonopoly Service has officially announced on its Telegram channel that a criminal case has been initiated against Apple. The fact is that on August 30, the state body demanded that Apple withdraw the ban put forward to application developers to inform users inside the software about the possibility of paying for various goods and services outside the AppStore digital store. The company was given a month to fulfill this requirement, which expired on September 30, but to this day, a whole month later, the American giant has not fulfilled the legal requirement of the FAS to stop abuse in the market.

“If Apple is found to have violated the Law on the Protection of Competition, it could face a turnover fine on the amount of revenue in the market,” the FAS said.

Representatives of the Federal Antimonopoly Service also reported that the problem related to the ban on notification of the possibility to pay outside the AppStore was reported to her by both the users of iOS gadgets and the developers of software for this platform. Users, for example, complained to the Federal Antimonopoly Service that it is often much cheaper to buy a product or service on the seller’s official website than through Apple’s built-in system. The reason, of course, is that Apple charges a commission on absolutely any payment made within the AppStore – the commission is from 15 to 30%.

The main problem with the giant’s approach is that the overwhelming majority of game and application developers are prohibited from informing users about alternative payment methods, as well as from posting links to the official website where payment can be made – such applications simply do not pass through the AppStore. At the moment, after a number of investigations in Europe, the United States and South Korea, Apple has promised to lift the ban on informing about third-party payment methods, but, apparently, the company has not kept its promise so far.
