Fast internet switching – Fiber optic connections are increasing

The increased needs brought by the pandemic due to teleworking and distance education, as well as the entertainment options via the Internet that are increasing, lead the Greek subscribers in search of faster connections.

So there are more and more landline subscribers who take the step and install fiber optic connections to the house (Fiber To The Home – FTTH). This can be seen from the demand for special subsidy coupons for these connections offered by the SuperFast Broadband (SFBB) program.

In 2021, approximately 63,843 households and businesses applied for the coupon, while last year only 17,921 applications were submitted. In total, the coupons that have been given in the four years that the action has been running reach 85,522, as in 2019 3,500 coupons were given and in 2018 only 500.

The SFBB was launched in 2018 by the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Posts and its period has already been extended until March 2022. The coupon covers part of the connection cost (ie one-time connection cost of 48 euros), and part of the monthly fee with the amount of 13 euros per month for 24 months.

At the end of 2022, the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Posts will take the final decisions to extend the time frame of the SFBB project and the necessary modifications, as despite the increased rate, the connections remain much less than the coverage provided by the telecommunications providers.

New subsidy for buildings

One of the reasons for the reluctance of new fiber optic connections is that work is required, which often requires the approval of the entire building.

This is because a new network is being created within the apartment building, which is connected to the central fiber optic network that has been installed under the road and then extends into the service subscriber’s house.

To overcome this obstacle, a new program has been envisaged which will subsidize the installation of fiber optics in the country’s buildings. The “Fiber Readiness” program has been included in the Recovery Fund with a budget of 73 million euros and will subsidize building owners for the installation of fiber optic networks in the form of a coupon of 800-1,000 euros.

The subsidy program will be able to install the necessary networks in the apartment building and on all floors and then anyone who wants to make a fiber optic connection will simply be required to complete the final connection from the floor to his apartment.
