Fate of Gaza ceasefire plan in Hamas leader’s hands, CIA deputy director says

The fate of the truce plan between Israel and Hamas depends largely on the leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement, CIA Deputy Director David Cohen argued today. This is “a question that will be answered” by the Hamas leader, Cohen said, without mentioning Yahya Shinuar by name. The Israeli side has shown seriousness in negotiations, the CIA deputy director told a conference on national security and intelligence gathering in Washington. The aim of the indirect negotiations – brokered by the US, Egypt and Qatar – is to reach an agreement on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of Hamas hostages, to also prevent the conflict from spreading to the wider Middle East region.
