Father of children who were lost for 40 days in the Amazon is arrested for sexual abuse and domestic violence

Manuel Ranoque, father of two of the four Colombian children who survived more than a month in the Amazon jungle after a plane crash, was arrested for alleged sexual abuse of minors and domestic violence, he told CNN a source from the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic of Colombia.

According to the source, Ranoque is being investigated for events allegedly recorded before the accident in which the children survived. For 40 days, the children were lost in the jungle before being rescued on June 9.

As this is a fact involving minors, the Public Prosecutor’s Office maintains secrecy about the data that led to the request for the arrest warrant. For now, the entity has not publicly commented on the case.

The four children rescued in the so-called Operation Hope remain in the custody of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF). On July 14, they were discharged from the Colombian Military Hospital in Bogotá, where they have been treated since their discovery.

Local media reported statements in which the children’s maternal grandparents expressed their opposition to Ranoque’s remaining in custody, citing alleged abuse. Also in statements to the media, he denied these accusations.

The children’s mother, Magdalena Mucutuy, died in the accident, as well as the plane’s pilot and an indigenous leader from the Amazon.
