US President Joe Biden is briefed on developments in the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus, the White House said, at a time when Britain, Germany and Italy announced that they had identified cases.
“At the same time, senior health officials and the Covid response team are following the latest developments for Omicron and are in regular contact with health officials around the world,” the White House said in a statement.
So far, Omicron has not been identified in the US. But Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading American epidemiologist, said on NBC’s Weekend Today that he “would not be surprised” if that happened. “When we have a virus that shows this level of transmission and we already have travel-related cases, such as in Israel and Belgium and elsewhere, when we have such a virus, it is almost inevitable that it will go virtually everywhere,” Fauci said.
