Brian Warndran, assistant director of the Cybersecurity Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), said that cryptocurrencies have become the main tool of ransomware.
Bryan Vorndran said in an interview with Bloomberg that blockchain provides a huge opportunity, and not just for technology companies. However, now, according to him, there are much more problems from this technology.
“Cryptocurrencies have become the main tool of ransomware, they help criminals to receive payments from their victims quickly and with little to no trace. Distributed registry technology has become a huge challenge for law enforcement,” he said.
Vordran noted that some companies that have been hacked or extorted simply do not report criminal activities to the FBI, citing internal regulations. This complicates the work and does not allow to fully analyze the actions of criminals in order to prevent them in the future.
Last week, the FBI released a report warning of an increase in scams on dating sites on Valentine’s Day. The FBI has received over 1,800 complaints related to cryptocurrency fraud. The total loss was estimated at about $133 million.
In addition, at the end of last year, the FBI warned the public about the growing number of thefts of cryptocurrencies using cryptomats and QR codes.
